Introduction:

  Kerala, one of the most beautiful states of India is situated on the Malabar coast of India.  The term ‘Kera’ stands for coconut tree and ‘Alam’ means land. Therefore Kerala can be known as the land of the coconut tree. The Malayalam language is spoken here. The state is known for its rich history, dances, delicious cuisines, Ayurveda therapies, tourism, arts & culture, history, government, and especially Geography. Kerala has a treasure trove of amazing facts. To introduce you to some of them, here we will take a look at 10 interesting facts about Kerala that you might not have known.

        1.  God’s own country:

Kerala’s tourism department promotes the state under the slogan “God’s own Country.” A channel of backwaters runs through the entire state, connecting the Arabian Sea to Kerala and providing the state with the most picturesque backdrop for all your photos. It is believed that this state is a very beautiful state situated in the lap of nature, the beauty of which is created by God Himself.

2.  The first state of India to receive a rain shower:

The state of Kerala receives the first rainfall of the monsoon season. While the rest of the states welcome rain mostly in July. This is truly God’s own world where nature seems to be enchanting from all sides.

3.  Primary method of  medicine: Ayurveda

 Even today Kerala follows a longstanding tradition of using Ayurveda for medicine and treatment. Kerala has the world’s first Ayurvedic resort named somatheeram. Even today, the people of Kerala give priority to Ayurveda for the treatment of serious illnesses. A vast diversity of herbs and spices are cultivated here because of the amazing climate and the many blessings of nature.

4.  The country with the highest consumption of gold                 

NSSO survey data indicates that Kerala has the highest monthly per capita expenditure

(MPCE) on gold ornaments among all Indian states. The state consumes 1/5th of the

country’s gold. In Kerala, most brides are encrusted in gold from head to toe. 

5.  Largest producer of Rubber:

India is the fourth largest rubber- production country in the world. Where 90% of the rubber production takes place in Kerala. The rubber industry in Kerala occupies approximately 5.45 hectares of land.                       

6.  Highest Literacy rate:

 Kerala comes under the most literate state in India with a literacy rate of 96.2 percent. As per the census record of 2011, there are almost 96.11 percent of males & 92.07% of females are literate in Kerala. Pathanamthitta in Kerala’s city area has a literacy rate of 97.42 percent, while Kottayam has 97.17 percent in the rural areas.

7.   Backwaters- the prime attraction of the state:

  Kerala’s backwaters consist of a beautiful network of turquoise and serene streams and canals, all interwoven together in a harmonious manner. In Alleppey, you can find the backwaters, best known for the annual boat race held in August. There are many lagoons and lakes in these backwaters that lie parallel to the Arabian Sea. 

8.  First digital state of the country:

    In 2016, Kerala was announced as the first digital state of the country. Kerala has the highest telecom literacy rate in India, with full mobile connectivity and about 75% access to the internet.

9.   The treasure of spices:

 Kerala is an abundance of spices in all over India. It is home to an array of spices originating from the cultures of Christians, Muslims, Jews, and the merchants who settled here.

10.               First fully solar-powered airport:

 The Cochin airport of Kerala is considered the first fully solar power equipped airport in the world.  The United Nations honoured the airport as a ‘Champion of the Earth’ for its contributions to environmental conservation.
