Establishment/History

The Patiala and East Punjab  Government introduced Government Medical College, Patiala. In October 1951, as a part of a five-year plan, the government decided to provide high-quality education at the least cost. The first batch was put into motion on September 29, 1953. The classes were first held in the old Rajindar Hospital Building. Which is now relocated as the Archives Department on The Mall Road, Opp. The Giani Gurmukh Singh Musafir Memorial Central Library. The new Rajendra Hospital was built in 1953. The old hospital was then used by some PEPSU state offices as residential staying homes.

The Archives Department is currently housed in the old Rajindra Hospital. The old Rajindar Hospital is a lovely structure outside the old town, across from the Baradari. The old Rajindar Hospital, built during the second Council of Regency in 1877, was a beautiful, well-equipped structure with 56 beds. It was inaugurated in January 1883. Maharaja Rajindar Singh added a completely modern operation room to the building. During the second Council of Regency, The Dufferin Hospital was built near the Rajindra Hospital. . with the foundation stone laid in November 1888 and the building opening in October 1890.

“A doctor is a savior for those who want to live and a lamp for those who have lost hope and light.”

An initiative by the government to educate students who are interested in medical science.
