Solution: Vertebrates are a type of chordates in themselves. All chordates have a notochord which, in vertebrates, is replaced by a vertebral column (backbone) which maybe cartilaginous or bony in nature. Chordates include the following subphylums: Urochordata, Cephalochordata, and Vertebrata. Urochordata and Cephalochordata collectively fall under Protochordata. Protochordates have a notochord but not vertebral column; the latter is a characteristic of vertebrates (or Craniata) only. Thus, all chordates are not vertebrates, but all vertebrates are chordates.
