(i) In terms of human development indicators, China is ahead of India and Pakistan. China ranks higher in terms of income indicators such as GDP per capita or the proportion of the population living in poverty, as well as health indicators such as mortality rates, access to sanitation, literacy, life expectancy, and malnutrition.
(ii) Pakistan is ahead of India in terms of reducing the proportion of people living in poverty, with 37.2 percent of Indians living in poverty compared to 22.3 percent in Pakistan in 2004-06.
(iii) Pakistan outperforms India in education, sanitation, and access to water.
(iv) Maternal mortality is much higher in India and Pakistan than in China. In China, only 38 women die for every 100,000 births, whereas more than 200 women die in India and Pakistan.
(v) All three countries report improved water sources for the majority of their populations.
(vi) India has the highest proportion of poor people among the three countries, based on the international poverty rate of $1 per day.
