Distinguish between the following: (a) Prostomium and peristomium (b) Septal nephridium and pharyngeal nephridium

(a)Prostomium

Anterior region of earthworm contains prostomium.It is a lobed structure that covers the mouth and also acts as a wedge to make open cracks present in the soil.It is responsible for sensory functions.


Peristomium

The first body segment of earthworm is known as the peristomium.It is a buccal segment that contains the mouth.


(b)Septal nephridium

Septal nephridia is located on both the sides of the intersegmental septa of segment 15 to the last segment which  opens into the intestine.


Pharyngeal nephridium

It is present in the 4th, 5th and 6th segments as three paired tufts.
