What is NITJ?

Dr B.R.Ambedkar National Institute of technology is an engineering college in Jalandhar, Punjab. Formerly called the Regional Engineering College, the National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar (NITJ) was founded in 1987. The Government of India officially deemed it the National Institute of Technology in 2002 under the Shiksha Mantralaya (Ministry of Education). Apart from engineering (B.Tech), NITJ offers other courses like M.Tech, M.Sc, and MBA.

NITJ strives to become a well-known Institute in providing research and training in engineering and science to its students to help the country grow industrially and economically and build successful careers.

It also aims to be a Swachh National Institute by providing comfortable hostels, clean water and hygienic food.

NITJ is mainly an engineering college offering undergraduate (B.Tech) and postgraduate courses (M.Tech) on engineering subjects. It also provides courses like M.BA and M.Sc. The PhD programmes are available in various subjects. 

 

B.Tech Courses (a four-year course) offered on:

Minor B.Tech degree programmes: A new system introduced by NITJ where students can earn an additional degree called the minor degree. It is in addition to the major degree (main degree) they are already pursuing. Students have to study six special courses starting from their 3rd semester (one in each semester). Students can take admission for M.Tech courses either via CCMT (Centralized Counselling for M.Tech/M.Arch/M.Plan) or by directly applying.

NITJ also provides postgraduate diplomas in some of these subjects.

 

M.Sc Courses (a two-year course) offered on:

  2. Chemistry

  3. Mathematics

 

MBA courses are offered only in Humanities and Management. It is a two-year course. There’s also a one-year postgraduate diploma course available on the same subject in the Management Programme.

Eligibility Criteria for Admission

For B.Tech:

  1. Students need to score at least 60% in their 12th board exams.

  2. They must have a Science background in 12th grade with Maths, Physics and Chemistry as their main subjects.

  3. Students need to give the JEE (Joint Entrance Examination). NITJ will permit only those students who secure a good rank in this exam by counselling through JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority).

  4. Foreign students or Indian nationals can also take admission directly via the DASA scheme (Direct Admission Students Abroad).

  5. Apart from this, there are two programmes available for admission: Cultural Exchange Programme and Study in India programme. Both programmes are exclusively for foreign students.

The overall cost for this four-year course would be Rs 3.52 lacs.

For M. Tech:

  1. Students need to have a B.Tech degree with a minimum of 60% marks (CGPA-6.5). Students in the minority category (SC/ST) or students with disabilities (PwD) need to score 55% or have a 6.0 CGPA.

  2. Students need to give the GATE (Graduation Aptitude Test for Engineering) and secure decent scores to be eligible. NITJ will only consider those students who haven’t given the GATE exam if there is a vacancy after admission. These students will have to pass the entrance exam taken by NITJ.

  3. Students sponsored by UGC/AICTE approved engineering institutes or R&D organizations/laboratories with a B.Tech degree and preferably having two years of full-time work experience are also eligible. They need not give the GATE exam.

  4. Admissions will be done via CCMT.

The overall cost for this two-year course will be Rs 1.21 lacs.

For M.Sc:

  1. Students need to have a B.Sc degree from a recognized university with at least 60% marks or a 6.5 CPGA. Students in minority categories will get a relaxation of 5% marks or 0.5 CGPA.

  2. Students need to give the JAM (Joint Admission Test for M.Sc). Based on the test scores, students will be selected via the CCMN (Centralized Counselling for M.Sc/M.Sc (Tech).

The overall cost for this two-year course will be Rs 51,000.

For MBA:

  1. Students need to have a bachelor’s degree in any discipline with 60% marks.

  2. They need to pass the CAT/GMAT/CMAT/MAT exam. Eligible candidates with good marks will have to participate in a group discussion and give an interview.

  3. In case students who haven’t given either of the exams will have to give to exam the exam taken by NITJ followed by a group discussion and an interview.

The overall cost for this two-year course will be Rs 1.21 lacs.

For PhD:

  1. Students will require a master’s degree with 60% marks or a 6.5 CGPA in the discipline that they are applying.

  2. Students with GATE/NET/UGC scores need not give the exam taken by NITJ. However, all students need to attend the interview and give presentations.

The overall cost for this course will be Rs 99,000. Students can either apply for a part-time or a full-time PhD.
