HISTORY
British India established The University of Delhi in 1992 as a teaching, unitary and residential university by an act of the then Central Legislative Assembly. Only four colleges were present in Delhi at that time: Zakir Husain Delhi College (were known as Delhi college), founded in 1792; St. Stephen’s College founded in 1881; Hindu College founded in 1899, which were associated with the university. In the beginning, DU had approximately 750 students with only two faculties- Arts and Science.
Sir Maurice Gwyer became Vice-Chancellor of the University of Delhi when he arrived in India in 1937 to serve as Chief Justice of British India. During his tenure at the university, postgraduate teaching courses were offered, and laboratories were constructed. Daulat Singh Kothari, a physicist, and Panchanan Maheshwari, a botanist, were among the academic members. Gwyer has been dubbed the “university-maker.” He held the position of Vice-Chancellor until 1950.
Vijayendra Kasturi Ranga Varadaraja Rao raised the national flag for the first time in the main building during the university’s silver jubilee year in 1947, which also happened to be India’s independence year. Because of India’s division, there was no convocation that year. Instead, in 1948, a special ceremony was organized, with Lord Mountbatten, Lady Mountbatten, Abul Kalam Azad, Zakir Husain, and Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar in attendance. Then-Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi, Satyajit Ray, Amrita Pritam, and M. S. Subbulakshmi all attended the golden jubilee celebrations in 1973, which took place twenty-five years later.
