What is GRE?
GRE stands for Graduate Record Examinations. GRE is a required examination for the candidates who aspire to go to Canada or the United States of America for further education. GRE tests the candidate’s ability for abstract thinking, mathematical calculation, and English Vocabulary.
The whole purpose of this test is for admission to master’s degree or doctoral degree programs in many foreign universities. For GRE, there are around 1000 test centers in 160 countries.
In general, the GRE is mandatory for applicants in countries like the USA or Canada.
As GRE is for determining a candidate’s capability of logical thinking and problem solving, its score is valid for 5 years to be submitted anywhere it’s required.
According to the reports of 2016, there were a total of 584,677 candidates who appeared for the GRE.
What are the requirements for GRE?
There are specifically no criteria for eligibility for the GRE. Educational Testing Service mentions nothing to be eligible to be an examinee for GRE. Anyone can register themselves for the GRE irrespective of any other qualification or age.
Modes of Exam:
1. Offline or paper – based test
In this mode, the exam is taken on paper at the respective test centers. This mode is for destinations where computers available are not compatible. But in India, candidates have to opt for computer-based tests only.
2. Online or computer-based test
In this mode, the exam is taken on a computer. Candidates have to go to respective test centers and be seated on an assigned computer to start the test. This mode is widely used among all countries.
3. Home edition test
This mode was introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic. In this mode, candidates have to give tests online on their respective computers/ PCs/ desktops. Covid-19 has impacted majorly over tests taking modes for most exams, and the GRE is one of them.
Recent updates on GRE 2022:
Educational testing service now accepting Aadhar card w.e.f. July 1, 2021 as Id proof for Indian candidates, in case these students cannot produce valid passports for Id verification.
ETS now has raised GRE registration fees to $213; which earlier was $205.
IMP – GRE home edition was launched during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
Validity of GRE test scores
Many people stay confused about the validity of GRE scores. GRE test candidates should know that the scores are valid for a period of five years starting from the date of examination.
