Solution: Monocots and dicots can be differentiated as follows:

  • Dicot plants have two cotyledons in their seeds whereas monocots are characterized by the presence of a single cotyledon

  • Dicot plants have reticulate venation and monocot plants have parallel venation in their leaves.

  • Vascular bundles of dicots are arranged in a ring whereas that of monocots are scattered.

  • Dicot plants have mostly non-endospermic seeds but monocot plants have endospermic seeds.

  • Dicots may have tap roots, adventitious roots or both. Monocots, however, bear adventitious roots only.

Dicots mostly have woody stems but monocot stems are herbaceous and soft.
