Solution:The accumulation of larger amount of biodegradable waste causes different kinds of pollution in our environment.Large amounts of waste also cause bad odour and many insects, mosquitos, and flies start to grow there, and they act as vectors for many dangerous infectious diseases in animals.Improper disposal of large amounts of biodegradable waste in water bodies leads to contamination of the water and also the production of algal blooms.Algal blooms in water reduce dissolved oxygen in water and lead to eutrophication.Eutrophication is the process characterised by high amount of nutrients in water bodies due to growth of algae and other plants.
Biodegradable substances
Substances that are easily decomposed by biological processes are called biodegradable substances. These substances are environmentally friendly and do not cause pollution.
Eg:Vegetable wastes,fruit peel,paper,cotton
Non-biodegradable substances
Substances that are not easily decomposed by biological processes are called non-biodegradable substances. These substances are not environmentally friendly and cause pollution.
Example:Plastic,paints,tyres,heavy metals
Ways to prevent problems caused by biodegradable wastes
Safe disposal of wastes
Use public waste bins
Avoid disposing wastes in water bodies
Stop combustion of biodegradable wastes
