Protests by Krantikari Yuva Sangathan (KYS) outside Delhi University’s St. Stephen’s College on Friday. It’s demanding to remove the interview condition for admission immediately.
DU has asked St. Stephen’s College to grant general category students admissions based on CUET scores. And hold interviews only for ‘reserved’ seats on an 85:15 ratio. The college has stated that it will continue to hold interviews for all candidates.
50% of the seats at the college are for Christian students. After the college principal declined to meet with the KYS members, an image of him was burned.
“This is an elitist custom. Because the whole purpose of conducting interviews is to pick the most elite applicants for college entrance.”
“To prevent kids from low-income households from enrolling in college, this criterion is utilized. Hence, maintaining the elitism of admittance and sustaining the privilege of certain clans and families”. KYS alleged in a statement.
“This is pitiful,” it said. “And contrasts with former fights, such as those of Jyotiba Phule and Savitribai Phule against educational advantages.”
The student group also urged that the college offer an evening class.
