Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri National Sanskrit University is a central university established by an act of parliament. It was known as Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeeth, situated in Delhi. Late Shri Shastriji’s enthusiasm and guidance provided the momentum for the growth of this Vidyapeetha. In his capacity as the Prime Minister of India, Shastriji declared that this Vidyapeetha will be developed as an international institution.

 

Following Shastriji’s death, Smt. Indira Gandhi accepted the presidency of the Vidyapeetha.On October 2, 1966, she proclaimed that the Vidyapeetha will be called Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha. The Indian government took over the Vidyapeetha on April 1, 1967. On December 21, 1970, it was renamed Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Kendriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha. It became a constituent of the Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, a registered independent Society.



The government of India, in March 1983, proposed that Vidyapeetha have the qualities to get the status of Deemed to be University. In 1987, Vidyapeetha got the status of Deemed to be University.

Eligibility criteria 

  • B.A- 10+2 with Sanskrit/ Uttar madhyama/ Prak Shastri. Minimum age – 16 

  • M.A- 3 years degree course with Sanskrit or equivalent examination from a recognized university. Minimum age – 19.

  • B.Ed- B.A or M.A with Sanskrit with a minimum of 50%. Minimum age – 16.

  • P.hD- Masters degree with minimum 55%

  • M.Phil- Masters degree with minimum 55%. Minimum age – 22.
