“Rain on the Roof” is a small poem written by Coates Kinney in which he recalls his sweet childhood memories and his memory with the rain.

In the first stanza, the poet describes the scene of the dark cloudy and rainy night. He said that the sky is full of the dark clouds due to which the stars have become invisible. The sky has become full of moisture and water and it’s about to rain heavily. He says that the sky is making him sad as the rain is his emotions and he feels as if the tears are dropping from his eyes. The poet says that the thing which brings happiness is lying down with the pillow. His mood changes and he becomes joyful soon after listening to the sound of raindrops.

The poet says that every drop on the rooftop is like an echo in his heart. He says that when he hears the raindrop falling on the rooftop he recalls many past memories as dreams. This raindrop brings many sweet imaginations in the mind of the poet. These memories seem as if it is weaving of threads and making patchworks.

In the last stanza, the poet talks about his beloved mother who is no longer alive. He said that she loved him and used to call him darling. His mother would see him overnight as she believed that she could not see him the next morning. She would allow the narrator to sleep till the sunrise. Whenever the narrator heard the raindrop, it would remind him of his memories with his mother. The repetitive rhythm of the raindrop evokes all his memories.
