Solution:Mesosome is a membranous structure in prokaryotes. It is formed by extensions formed by plasma membrane into the cell. These extensions formed by plasma membrane appear in the form of vesicles, tubules and lamellae.

Functions of mesosome

  • Help in formation of cell wall

  • Help in replication of DNA and distribute it to the daughter cells

  • Help in respiration

  • Help in secretion process to increase surface area and also to increase enzymatic content

Features of prokaryotic cells

  • Prokaryotic cells contain a cell wall covering the cell membrane exception:mycoplasmas lack cell wall

  • Absence of a well defined nucleus

  • Genetic material of prokaryotes is naked and not surrounded by nuclear membrane

  • Presence of small circular DNA in addition to the genomic DNA.The small circular DNA is called plasmids.

  • Absence of membrane bound cell organelles

  • Presence of non-membrane bound organelles like ribosomes
