Solution:Biological magnification is the process in which the concentration of toxic substances like insecticides and inorganic fertilisers increases at each trophic level of the ecosystem..All these toxic substances are non-biodegradable and they start to accumulate in the bodies of organisms.Organisms present at the bottom level of food chain is affected by less concentration of toxic substances and organisms present in the top level of food chain affected by high concentration of toxic substances. The accumulation of toxic substances in the bodies of organisms like humans present at the top of the food chain causes serious diseases like cancer and metabolic disorders.

Causes of biological magnification

  • Heavy use of plastics

  • Manufacturing of toxic substances

  • Overuse of insecticides

Ways to prevent biomagnification

  • Reduce the use of heavy metals like lead

  • Avoid use of plastics

  • Reduce pollution

  • Proper disposal of wastes

  • Use organic fertilisers in farming

  • Use eco-friendly products

  • Proper cleaning of contaminated water resources

Biodegradable substances

Substances that are easily decomposed by biological processes are called biodegradable substances. These substances are environmentally friendly and do not cause pollution.

Eg:Vegetable wastes,fruit peel,paper,cotton

Non-biodegradable substances

Substances that are not easily decomposed by biological processes are called non-biodegradable substances. These substances are not environmentally friendly and cause pollution.

Example:Plastic,paints,tyres,heavy metals
