Solution:Ozone (O3) is formed by combining  three atoms of oxygen. Molecular O2 is called oxygen, and it is very important for aerobic respiration. The molecule O3 called  ozone and it is a deadly poisonous gas.The ozone layer present in the stratosphere is responsible for protecting earth from harmful ultraviolet(UV) radiations reaching the earth.Harmful UV radiation causes serious diseases like skin cancer and eye diseases in humans.

Formation of ozone

The UV radiation having higher energy divides molecular oxygen (O2) into two free oxygen (O) atoms. These free oxygen atoms combine with molecular oxygen atoms to form ozone(O3).

Ozone awareness day

To create awareness among people about the importance of the ozone layer,World Ozone Day is celebrated on September 16 every year.On this day, several seminars, webinars, and talks are conducted by various organizations to create awareness.

Ozone layer depletion

Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), carbon tetrachlorides, etc. are the substances responsible for causing ozone layer depletion. In 1987, the Montreal protocol was formulated to reduce the use of ozone layer-destroying substances. In Antarctica, the first ozone hole was identified.

Ways to protect the ozone layer

  • Use environment friendly products

  • Minimize the emission of greenhouse gasses from vehicles.

  • Avoid use of chlorofluorocarbons
