Solution : Hemoglobin is a pigment that is present in human blood. It is a respiratory pigment that carries oxygen in blood and transports this oxygen to all parts of the body.
Hemoglobin is present in the red blood cells. Each red blood cell consists of one hemoglobin.
Hemoglobin has a protein portion called globin, and the pigment portion is called heam.
Each heme portion consists of four iron molecules and each iron atom is capable of combining one oxygen molecule with it.
Thus each hemoglobin has four oxygen molecules that are attached to the four ferrous ions (iron atoms).
Deficiency of hemoglobin leads to the disease called anemia.
When there is a lack of the hemoglobin in the red blood cells, it leads to the decrease in the oxygen content in the blood as the heme pigment in the hemoglobin carries the oxygen molecule in the blood.
When there is a decrease in the hemoglobin, it leads to the inadequate supply of oxygen to all parts of the body. This low hemoglobin condition is called anemia.
Anemia makes you feel tired and weak. Anemia can also be caused due to low red blood cells, this condition may be due to early degeneration of RBCs or slow formation of blood cells.
Deficiency in hemoglobin also causes less oxygen binding and low oxygen content to reach the body tissues.
