Solution:Living organisms are classified for a better understanding of organisms. By classifying organisms, we can easily identify and learn about different organisms. Classification is carried out by scientists using different criteria. On the basis of characteristics, organisms are classified into different taxa, and this process of classification is called taxonomy. In modern taxonomic studies, morphology, anatomy, development, and ecology of organisms are taken into consideration.
Categories in taxonomy
Classification is the process which involves many steps and each step denotes a rank or category. In classification, each category is considered as a unit of classification.Taxonomic studies also led to development of categories kingdom, phylum or division, class, order, family, genus and species. In both animals and plant kingdoms species forms the lowest category.
Species
In taxonomic studies a group of individuals having fundamental similarities is considered as species. We can distinguish one species from another species based on morphological features.
Genus
In taxonomic studies a group of related species containing more characters in common is considered as genus.
Family
In taxonomic studies family contains groups of related genera having least number of characters in common compared to genus and species.
Order
In taxonomic studies order is considered as higher taxonomic category. In this category similar characters are generally less in number.
Class
In taxonomic studies related orders are included in class
Example:Order Primata formed of monkey,gorilla
