Solution: The two organelles that have their genetic material are mitochondria and chloroplast. This genetic material differs from that in the nucleus. Since these organelles have their genetic material, they are also referred to as autonomous organelles. They are also called extranuclear DNA, as it remains outside the nucleus. They do not remain associated with histones. Both are believed to be maternally inherited.

Both the organelles have circular DNA similar to that of prokaryotes. Mitochondrial DNA or mtDNA possess about 37 genes, while the Chloroplast DNA or ctDNA possess about 120 genes. They both occur more than one in number. Inside both organelles, the extranuclear DNA produces proteins that are vital for the functions of that particular organelle.
