Solution: Structure of a Neuron:

Neurons are the structural and functional units of the nervous system. They are responsible for conduction of nerve impulses in the form of action potential by using chemical or electrical means. Neurons are classified into three types on the basis of their function.

  • Sensory (Afferent) neurons: receive and conduct sensory impulses from sensory receptors to central nervous system (CNS)

  • Motor (Efferent) neurons: conduct motor impulses from CNS to effector organs, mainly their muscles.

  • Interneurons (Association neurons): integrate and analyse the input of information and distribute it to other parts of the nervous system; link between axons of sensory neurons and dendrites of motor neurons.
