Solution-Rainwater harvesting is a simple technique of preserving rainwater by collecting, storing, transmitting, and filtering rainwater that runs off of rooftops, parks, roads, and open spaces, among other places.
Water harvesting structures on the plains are crescent-shaped earthen embankments. These are concrete, low, and straight.
Water harvesting systems in hilly/mountainous areas–
For water collection in mountainous areas, the Kulhs Is canal irrigation technique is employed. Rainwater is collected in a stream and then channeled into man-made channels that run down the slopes.
Naula and Kuhl are two water gathering techniques utilized in hilly/mountainous areas
Naula– Naula is a tiny well or pond created by building a stone wall over a stream to collect water. This water is meant to be consumed by humans.
Kuhl–Surface channels that divert water from natural streams and run at a higher elevation than the streams to irrigate upstream regions are known as Kuhl channels.
Darns–Darns are also constructed over the rugged mountainous terrain to conserve water for later use.
Background-Significance of rainwater harvesting-
1.It reduces runoff loss and avoids flooding.
2.It meets the increasing demand of water.
3.Reduces power consumption.
4.It improves soil moisture and decreases soil erosion.
