Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the then-Minister of Education, inaugurated the Lalit Kala Academy in New Delhi on August 5th, 1954. The Lalit Kala Academy, the newest of the three Academies founded by the Indian government, was founded to fulfill the dream of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, for cultural and national identity. The Lalit Kala Academy was one of three such national organizations that arose as a result of this. The LKA was the first organization to concentrate its efforts on visual arts activities. The Academy must work to preserve the glorious traditions of the past and enrich them with the work of our modern artists, said Maulana Abul Kalam. In his inaugural speech. It must also strive to raise standards and improve public perception.

Goals

Encourage and promote study and research in creative arts fields such as painting, sculpture, and graphics.
Encourage and coordinate the work of regional art organizations and state Lalit Kala Academies.
To encourage collaboration among artists and art associations, and the growth of such organizations.
Encourage the establishment of Regional Art Centers, as needed.
To promote the exchange of ideas between different schools of art by organizing conferences, seminars, exhibitions, and other events across India involving scholars and educators, as well as State Academies, Zonal Cultural Centers, and Art Organizations such as art faculties in universities, art colleges and schools, art museums, art galleries, and art associations.
Incorporating amendments approved by the Government of India Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of Culture in their notification No. 3-34/97 Desk (PA) dated 8th January 1999 and the Ministry of Tourism and Culture in their notification No. 3-20/2000 US (Academies) dated 13.5.2002.
In consultation with the State Academies and the Government, to recognize art associations for assisting artists. Through that, they can promote the proper growth and functioning of art associations and organizations.
Through art exhibitions, exchanges of personal and art objects. And other means, foster cultural contacts within the country and with other countries.
Scholarships and prizes will be given out to deserving artists.
Artists’ outstanding achievements should be recognized;
To encourage the study, research, and survey of folk, tribal, and traditional arts and crafts techniques. As well as preserve and project their art forms. Also organizing regional surveys of surviving indigenous artisans, painters, and sculptors;
Buy land, own property of all kinds, and maintain, sell, mortgage, or otherwise dispose of and deal with the same to further its objects and works.
To establish a Reserve Fund, Sinking Fund, or any other special fund. Whether for depreciation or repairs, improving, extending, or maintaining any of the Academy’s properties. Or rights, recoupment of wasting assets, or for any other purpose. For which the Academy deems it expedient or proper to establish or maintain any such fund or funds. In case no grants were received from the Government of India or any part of the income derived from expenditure was met.
To create and establish the Lalit Kala Artist’s Welfare Trust with the money available in the Artists Aid Fund and social security. And to credit all future funds under these heads to the Trust. To do all other acts, either alone or in collaboration with other organizations or individuals. So that academy may deem necessary needs and fulfillment of the above-mentioned objectives.

Library

The Library and the Lalit Kala Akademi were founded in 1954 in a small room in Jaipur House in New Delhi. In 1962, the Library relocated to its current location, Rabindra Bhavan (New Delhi). It began with 140 titles. It includes books and journals on art and has now grown to become the finest library devoted to the subject of art. To meet the diverse needs of its readers, this reference library now contains over 8700 books. On painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, graphic art, and architecture. There is also a fantastic collection of art reproductions available. Internet access, an OPAC system, and photocopying services are also available to readers.

Research

Collections

The Lalit Kala Academy is India’s National Academy of Art. It has flourished the paths of much Indian art through its chosen agenda since its start. The institution has been involved in the identification and display of visual art. It has become a keeper of Indian arts and its interaction with art practices around the world.

The Teaching of modern art was considered modern since post-independent India. Preservation and promotion of various arts from tribal to classical were necessary.

This institution has been organizing annual exhibitions. Also, purchasing award-winning artworks in its collection for the past sixty years.

The collection grew over time as the academy added works from the Art Fair, Workshops, Camps, and Artists Aid Fund to help needy artists. Academy has been able to gather works from across the country. The Academy has preserved a collection of over 6,000 artworks from various sources. Paintings, sculptures, and graphics are among the collections that can be accessed.
