Answer: Contraception is an approach to take certain precautionary measures to avoid conceiving of the zygote.

Different contraceptive methods are adopted because of the following reasons:

  1. To avoid transmission of diseases: The diseases which get transmitted due to sexual contact between two individuals are called sexually transmitted diseases. These can be bacterial infections (gonorrhoea and syphilis) and viral infections (warts and HIV-AIDS). The use of contraceptive methods such as condoms helps to prevent the transmission of these infections to some extent and ensure better reproductive health.

  2. To avoid unwanted pregnancy: If a female is not ready to conceive then different contraceptive methods can be used to prevent pregnancy such as use of condoms, contraceptive pills, copper – T or surgical methods etc.

  3. To control the size of the population: Reproduction results in the increase of population. Human population is increasing at an alarming rate and thus is a matter of concern. So different contraceptive methods along with fertility awareness can be used to control the size of the growing population. This ultimately helps in raising the standards of living.

  4. To maintain the age gap between two children: The ideal gap between two children should be approximately 2 – 3 years. It ensures the better health of both mother and children.
