Why are states often suspicious of cultural diversity?

Solution:States seek to create their political legitimacy through nation-building tactics, such as policies of assimilation or integration, in order to secure the allegiance and obedience of their citizens. Because most states have been skeptical of cultural diversity and have attempted to minimize or destroy it, this is the case. The governments are concerned that acknowledging several culturally distinct identities such as language, ethnicity, and religion may lead to social disintegration and hamper the formation of a cohesive community. Apart from the danger of fragmentation, reconciling these divisions is also politically difficult. As a result, many states have resorted to either hiding or ignoring these identities in the political realm.
